Basic Meatloaf Recipe

May 17, 2009 > 5 Comments

I found this in The Fannie Farmer Cookbook. I love this simple, yet exhaustive cookbook and use it often. Tonight my father-in-law said he liked this recipe I made over my mother-in-law’s. I’ll check tomorrow if he’s still alive.

Ingredients

2 cups freshly made bread crumbs
1 onion, chopped fine
2 eggs, slightly beaten
2 pounds ground beef
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/4 cup milk

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350° F. Lay celery sticks in bottom of a casserole dish. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl; your freshly washed hands are the best tools for the job. Shape into a loaf and place on top of celery sticks “rack.” Bake for 45 minutes to an hour.

I love the idea of using celery sticks to allow the grease to drain away from the meatloaf! I hate trying to clean all of pieces of meatloaf out of the little holes in my meatloaf pan.

I love meatloaf. My problem is my hubby. Apparently he was fed A LOT of meatloaf as a child ( and his mom was not a good cook). I can’t convince him that he should eat it again. Maybe I will try again, with your recipe. Thanks.

I love meatloaf, but I don’t make it very often. I just forget about it. I have now added it to my weekly menu and I will try this recipe.

I hope your Father-in-Law is still alive in the morning too. Heeeeeeeeee Heeeeeeeeeeeeee…..

    Thanks for sharing.

My 2 yo LOVES meatloaf- that’s one thing I know he will eat! Mine’s very basic w/ egg, breadcrubs, ketchup, and worcestershire. I will have to try your recipe and see if it perks it up a bit! Thanks!
