Countertop Compost Bucket
March 25, 2009 > No Comments
Nothing spectacular today, but I thought I would share my perhaps unusual “compost bucket.”
I’ve seen people use those huge ice cream buckets or just a plate or even a large feed bucket. But I wanted something that was fairly attractive to sit on my counter AND something with an easy to remove lid.
I wasn’t very satisfied with my options…too expensive…too big…too small…After a couple of weeks of searching I stumbled upon this campfire “bucket” thingy I found in the camping supplies department in my Wal-Mart. It was under $10. The bucket had an easy lid that just set on top & yet kept out the bugs and kept the icky smells from permeating my kitchen.

I have a compost container myself, and when researching them I found out that they do need to breath a little so that when you lift the lid you don’t get an overwhelming odor. If you empty it and rinse it daily that shouldn’t be a problem, but if you wait until it’s full, you might find you need to find a way to let some air circulate.
If you crack the lid a little you might find your self with fruit flies in the kitchen, so the best bet might be putting a couple of small holes in the lid. Then go to your local hardware store and find some carbon filter material. They often sell it for air purifiers. I found some tiny clearance packs for a small plug in unit that work perfectly. Carbon neutralizes any odors that may try escape your pail.
Give it some time before you alter your pail. Just thought I’d share what I learned when making mine. (I used a coffee can for mine-although the lid can be a pain sometimes & is starting to crack)

Wow, thanks! I never really thought to research that! And I am the queen of research! LoL Most days we do empty it daily but rainy days & such we’ll wait ’til the next day or so. I’ll be thinking on a solution, such as drilling a few holes in the lid, but for now I’ll crack the lid a bit and see what happens. Thanks!

What a great idea! I’ve wanted to make a compost container too. I priced a few and they were expensive. I like your idea with the campfire bucket, and I like the way it looks. It would go well with my country themed kitchen decor
I also like the idea from Suz about the air holes and carbon filters. I read that keeping the food scraps covered by adding dry materials like shredded paper, straw, or sawdust helps eliminate odors and fruit flies.

Wow a great “pretty” little bucket! I am also doing some research on composting, but haven’t actually started it yet! I have a pretty big garden and well I just don’t understand all the ins and outs of composting so until I do more research I guess I will be just giving the scraps to the cats and dog!

Great idea! I just always have to take a trip out to my backyard to throw things in the compost bin.
