Help! Keeping Your Coffee Hot
February 8, 2012 > 6 Comments
After years of dawdling, I think we might actually ditch the microwave. I will have to update you in a few months. Plans now are to unplug it, then ditch it after months and months of no use. We shall see. I was wondering if any of my readers have ditched the microwave or never had one in the first place? Did you receive a lot of opposition from the family? How do you warm things up?
My husband is most of the way ok with trying to live without it, but his main drawback is that his coffee gets cold. Long story, real short – he has dysphasia and it can take a long time for his coffee to go down, so he has to warm one cup of coffee a couple times.
I saw these on Pinterest and thought I was going to give them a try. Until I saw how much they were! $50!
Then I found this review and decided that I think I will just invest in a nice, sleek, insulated coffee mug.
What do you do to keep your coffee hot? Is there some neat gadget I haven’t stumbled across yet?

When we moved our new place didn’t have a microwave, so we had to decide whether or not we should invest in one. The main things we used it for was popcorn, thawing meat, and warming up leftovers. We decided to go for a toaster oven and have been pretty happy with that decision.
I don’t have a solution for the coffee, except to maybe poor less in your cup at a time.

We try to use the microwave as little as possible-My mother-in-law laughs at all my little quirks
I heat leftovers in my oven-it has a convection setting.Does he use cream in his coffee? You could heat the cream on the stove first-we do that a lot here-or else the coffee gets too cold too fast. Also if he is on the go you can buy those stainless steel mugs that you can plug into the car.Just a thought!

My first question would be why do you want to ditch the microwave? Does it take up counter space? Does it use too much electricity? I use my microwave daily. I melt butter for recipes, I melt my chocolate for dipping pretzels, as well as convenience meals and leftovers as well. My kids like to rewarm their muffins. I don’t think I could live without my microwave. I have a toaster oven too for toasting leftover waffles and warming leftover pizza or multiple pieces of toast.
I do rewarm my coffee in the microwave as well.
Have you ever seen those little coffee warmers that you plug in and set your mug on? I’ve often wondered about those if they work well. My coffee pot brews into a carafe instead of a pot and I have been known to take it chair side where I am reading and pour hot coffee from it. The problem was I had to bring the cream with me. Too much of a hassle….lol
How many of those coffee warmers do you get for 50 dollars? Maybe someone would split an order with you.
Anyway! Missy Have a great day!

I have no great suggestions. We live with my in-laws so I can’t relly get rid of the microwave, but I do limit our use of it greatly! I wasn’t sure if you’re familiar with Sarah at Heart’s Desire but she has a list of 10 reasons not to use the microwave, and she tells how they’re survivng without their’s. Here’s the link to her post…http://sarah-heartsdesire.blogspot.com/2012/01/can-you-guess-what-this-is.html
Missy, I thought this could help answer your question too.

Mom pours boiling water in our mugs a few minutes prior to pouring the coffee, preheating the mug. Dad’s pretty picky about his coffee pot, too, so that it comes out as hot as possible. The coffee maker we have now…when you pour your coffee, I think it’s around 150* or something like that. It gets a little hotter as it sits, but it is a stainless commercial maker. Not sure how hot a regular maker makes the coffee.
A lot of the time Mom makes half a cup at a time, for her. She’s slow at drinking it so that keeps her’s hot.

We ditched our microwave a looong time ago…it was dying anyway. It has never been a problem. We did have one relative that asked if it was some religious reason
. Nope,just practical.
Sorry no suggestions for keeping coffee warm.
