Homeschool Memoirs: #7 Snack Foods
October 2, 2008 > No Comments

Awhile back Mother Dear received a question on what snack foods to buy for homeschooling families, on the go or at home, and she inspired this week’s theme over at Homeschool Memoirs. So I thought I’d join in on this one as my kids are big snackers.
We are in a slump right now, slowly finding our way back to eating naturally again. I think we are finally settling into life after our big move.
Anyway…we don’t really do prepared snack foods like you would buy in the stores. Those are often over priced and not good for you.
Thankfully our children love fruit! Right now we have an abundance of apples after visiting a local orchard, so apples are our snack this week. Other times we have grapes, oranges, peaches, bananas and strawberries.
Sometimes I make smoothies with organic plain yogurt, honey, and frozen/fresh fruit. That’s always a treat!
Another snack that we’ve recently discovered was organic plain yogurt sprinkled with a generous amount of Grape-Nuts. I don’t particularly like it but the children do!
At times I either make home-made granola or if it’s on sale I’ll buy Kashi Cereal or another similar brand and they’ll eat it dry.
A glass of milk with a little Ovaltine mixed in always seems to satisfy them.
We always have carrot sticks, but when they’re hungry they can scarf a lot of these down.
Natural P.B. can be expensive so depending on our finances I’ll let them each have a spoon full of P.B. with a glass of milk to wash it all down.
Occasionally, I will use snack time to clean out the refrigerator of miscellaneous items.
We also sometimes have TLC (Kashi) crackers with cheese.
Well, not a very exciting snack menu but it works for us!
