Just Smile, Momma!

There have been many times when I got engrossed in a project, neglected the house, the kids, school, and/or the meals. Yes, I am ashamed to admit it. I tend to be a bit OCD, Type A, perfectionist in every sense and I find it difficult to give my all to an activity when I am pulled in 327 different directions. So sometimes I tune everything out and tackle it.

Too often I will suddenly realize the time and go into overdrive, throwing socks, giving commands, starting supper, grading school, getting presentable for the husband, sweeping the floor, vacuuming, switching laundry, trying to make up for having neglected these things.

Sometimes I am not very pleasant to be around. Sometimes I yell. Sometimes I am too bossy.

One recent afternoon this was the scenario and I apologized to the children for my behavior. I actually apologized for neglecting them, our home, and all the things that make up our life during this particular afternoon. I apologized for them all having to scramble to make up for time I “wasted.”

But you know what?

My oldest son told me that it was ok!

He understood that I was entrenched in project; he knows his momma’s personality quite well. What he said next struck me and has stayed with me.

“Momma, it’s ok that you were doing that. I want you to do that. I know it makes you happy. But…

I just want you to be nice and smile afterwards! And it will make me happy to help you catch up!”

So Momma, I don’t know if your kids are like mine, but seems like a smile could mean a lot!

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. – Proverbs 17:22

I am the same way! That is why it has been years since I have sewed :( . I am waiting to get everything else done so I can be sweet! I have been trying to smile more too … I find the more time I take to be grateful the more I smile :) .

I think it blesses our children to hear it, and blesses us to ask for it, and softens their hearts towards us. They learn how to ask for forgiveness by our example, and it also teaches us (and them) humility.

I thought it was funny because I am multi-tasking while reading your post. I was making pancakes for the freezer (to pop in the toaster for breakfast) and your post made me remember I was trying to do two things at once, lol! Thanks for linking up to Making Your Home Sing Monday!
