Blast from the Past: Bible, just another subject?

I’ve been pondering of late whether Bible is sometimes seen as just another subject in a Christian homeschool. I’m not saying it is wrong to have a subject in “Bible” as you would math or language, but wouldn’t it be better if we actually lived in such a way that the Bible was lived out and talked about and taught as you go throughout the day?
The Bible says we should “teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.”
It is so tempting to teach the Bible in the same manner as we would all the other subjects therefore possibly dumbing down the importance of God’s Word. “Whew! Got that subject out of the way now only 4 more to go…” I know, I’ve been guilty of it in the past.
The same can be said of so many parents when they drop their kids off for Sunday School. “They’re getting their Bible story for the week.” Don’t get me wrong I am not trying to say Sunday School is wrong, but does that make us feel less responsible to teach them through the week?
We’ve not used a standard Bible “curriculum” in a couple of years now. Here are just some of the ways that we incorporate the Bible into our daily lives.
1) Every child reads 2 chapters before they even get out of bed. This is not negotiable, no matter how busy we are or how late we get up. My husband and I are usually up before them and that is when we drink our coffee and read our Bible.
2) At breakfast each of the children take turns with their prayer lists. Our prayer lists consist of *Missionaries, *Miscelaneous needs, *A portion of Scripture we pray (Currently we’re praying Psalm 67. The added benefit of praying Scripture is that by the time you switch you have memorized that selection!), *Samaritan Ministries needs.
3) Before, during or after breakfast I read a Proverbs that corresponds with the date.
4) Currently we are reading a lesson each day out of Leading Little Ones to God. What a tremendous book! It is simple enough for our 6 yr old twins but keeps the interest of our 11 yr old.
5) They all memorize 1 verse a day and I just started the 2 older children in addition to the daily verse, memorizing through the Psalms. They are finishing up Psalm 1. I’ll let you know how that goes.
6) I don’t want to forget church. They are in church every time the doors are open (and sometimes when they’re not
as their dad is the Pastor so they often go “visit” dad in his office). Not only are they in our church faithfully but we very often go to revivals and special meetings at other churches within a 2 hour radius of us. Our family has been tremendously blessed by the preaching we’ve heard over the last 2 years at special meetings.
7) My husband regularly brings a devotion during the evenings, sometimes it’s often a lesson relevant to what the family is going through or dealing with.
8 ) And finally, several nights of the week we are listening to a sermon on the radio via Sermon Audio, watching a sermon on DVD (currently we are watching Bro. Kent Hovind’s material’s) or listening to a sermon on CD. Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, does it? O but it is…Our children are very eager to listen to preaching and enjoy it. For real! They have been conditioned from a very early age to love hearing God’s Word preached.
These are just some thoughts to ponder. Perhaps you’ve been guilty of looking at the Bible as just another subject in your homeschool. I encourage you to include the Bible in as many areas in your life as possible because only good can come from it.

Eye opening. I am such a slacker! Thanks for the inspiration to really work on this.

Okay, I’m feeling convicted. You are so right. It’s very easy to make daily “Bible” time just another subject in a long list of topics to tackle in school. But Jesus is not just any ole subject…he’s the Saviour of the World…suppose that affords him more than just a passing glance over the course of our day. I definitely need work in this area. Have a blessed day!

I second that motion! Sometimes we put “Bible” in a box and it’s hard to get it out of that box and put it into practice once that’s done.

That was an eye opener. How do you suggest that I would go about starting this and where in the bible would be a good area to begin. I have 2 girls a 9 year old and an almost 6 year old. I want them to truly love the LORD as I have come to love him. Your thoughts would be appreciated:)
