The Beach with Children: The Reality

February 9, 2012 > 1 Comment

We’ve all seen those picture perfect photos of families on the beach or should I say pictures of perfect families on the beach? Either way, each member is dressed in pristine white, parents are smiling and relaxed, children are smiling and clean, and a seagull just happens to be flying off in the distance…

And then there’s our family. The ideal not perfect family.

While we weren’t at the beach for a photo shoot, I was fully expecting our then family of 6 to have a pleasant (ie dry, calm) stroll along the beach with friends before we all enjoyed a quiet meal at a local restaurant.

We were not even all out of the van yet when I realized that this was so not going to happen.

My children climbed out of the van and proceeded to make sand angels in the beer bottle, cigarette butt, garbage laden sand next to the parking lot.

And the rest I would rather not talk about. Let’s just say, that I’m not the perfect mother.

Oh, and our friends? They are the people in those picture perfect photos of families on the beach.

A few years ago we went to a wedding and returned on a Sunday after morning service … we did not have much time as we planned to go to evening service in a different state and then had one more state before we would be home after that. I really wanted the kids to see the ocean and we were soooo close. We only had about 10 min., but we all had so much fun! We were all dressed for church and on lookers must have got a good laugh at the boys in their suits, pant legs rolled up laughing and jumping in the sand. You can collect a lot of stuff in 10 min. :) . We got most :) of the sand off before church :) . It was a memory we will never forget (and we ended up with some great pictures … but that was because of the smiles).
Oops! Long comment but the word beach brought back a great memory.
